Get Your Virginia Driver’s License!
STEP 1
Obtain your Learner’s Permit with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You must:
Pass the DMV two part knowledge exam.
- Part One, you must recognize all ten traffic sign questions without failure.
- Part Two: Pass 80% of the general knowledge questions.
Pass a vision screening.
Students 17 and Under who fail the DMV test must wait 15 days before they can retake the exam. This is a DMV requirement.
Students who fail to pass this examination three times must take a Three-Times-Failure Course either In-Person or Online. This is a DMV requirement.
STEP 2
With your Virginia Learner’s Permit, you may legally learn how to drive. Learn to drive with:
- Parents, family, or friends aged 21 or older all with good driving records.
- or an established Introductory Driving course.
Students 17 and Under must have a minimum of 45 hours on the road, seven at night, and hold their Learner’s Permit for nine months.
Students 18 and Older must have a minimum of 45 hours on the road, seven at night, and hold their Learner’s Permit for 60 days.
STEP 3
Earn your Virginia Driver’s License by demonstrating in-vehicle driving ability and passing road knowledge testing.
- Complete a Driver’s Education Course. In-Person or Online
- Complete a Road Evaluation or Road Skills Test at our School or the DMV.
STEP 4
Receive your Virginia Driver’s License by mail. Begin legally driving in the Commonwealth.
If you take the complete Driver’s Education program with us, you will leave your final driving session with a temporary license. The DMV will mail you the official and permanent license at a later date.
