Course Overview

Safe Driving School of the Piedmont provides both written test preparation and road evaluation periods for all ages. Students who successfully complete these Safe Driving courses are eligible to receive their Virginia Driver’s License through the school. The following courses are licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the Commonwealth of Virginia:

Written Test Preparation and Road Evaluation – Adult

Students are provided thirty six (36) 50-minute classroom periods and nine (9) Road Evaluations split into seven (7) observation sessions and seven (7) practical driving sessions with the student in control of a motor vehicle.

The classroom periods prepare the student for the written Virginia Motor Vehicle License test. The legal aspects of driving, rights, responsibilities and driver compliance are covered. Students 18 years of age and older may hold a Learner’s Permit for 60 days in lieu of completing a driver training course.

Written Test Preparation and Road Evaluation – 17 and Under

Students are provided thirty six (36) 50-minute classroom periods and nine (9) road evaluation periods split into seven (7) observation sessions and seven (7) practical driving sessions with the student in control of a motor vehicle.

The classroom periods prepare the student for the written Virginia Motor Vehicle License test. The legal aspects of driving, rights, responsibilities and driver compliance are covered. Students 17 years of age or under are required to complete all Drivers Education coursework prior to driver’s training.

Students 17 year of age and under may receive one-on-one training with an instructor if such training is agreed to by the parent or guardian. The student is required to meet the observation requirements with at least one other student in the vehicle during in-vehicle training.

Normally there are two (2) students in each road evaluation session. Each student drives and observes a 50-minute session. With parental permission, a third student can join the original two (2) students during the last observation period. The third student would observe for 50 minutes and then complete their road evaluation session after the first two students have departed. The third student would remain with the instructor and drive for the last 50 minutes. This option for road evaluations is helpful for students with school, work or other related time constraints.

Written Test Preparation Only

Students are provided thirty six (36) 50-minute classroom periods preparing them for the written Virginia Motor Vehicle License test.  The legal aspects of driving, rights, responsibilities and driver compliance are covered. Road evaluations are not provided with this option.
